You're not alone in this
You don't need the right words to start. Some people arrive knowing exactly what they're carrying: trauma, grief, a relationship in difficulty. Others just know that something feels off, that they're more tired, more anxious, or more disconnected from themselves than they used to be, without being able to say why.

Both are good reasons to reach out.

We work with adults facing anxiety, burnout, trauma, low mood, relationship difficulties, grief, neurodivergent experiences and shifts in identity or self-worth. Our approach is relational and evidence-informed, and it takes your pace seriously. Healing isn't rushed, and it isn't something done to you. It's something we work through together.

The place where healing meets honour
Shame has a way of convincing people they're the problem. Our work starts from a different premise: you are not the sum of what happened to you, and the parts of yourself you've silenced to get by deserve to be heard, not fixed.

Sessions are shame-aware, neuroaffirming and trauma-informed. That means we pay close attention to safety, pace, and what your nervous system can hold on a given day, and we won't ask you to perform progress you don't feel. Change tends to come from feeling steady enough to look at things honestly, not from being pushed.

"Working with Roger, I was able to rebuild my relationship with food and start a new career, something that had felt out of reach just a few months earlier."

"After counselling sessions with Helen, I feel at peace now and am full of positivity for the future"
.

Getting started
What happens after I get in touch?

A member of the team will usually reply within two to three working days, often sooner. You'll be offered a free 15 to 20 minute introductory call, with no obligation to continue.

Do I need to know what kind of therapy I want?
No. That's something we can work out together, once we understand what's brought you here.

Reaching out is often the hardest part. You don't need to have the right words, or even be sure this is the right step. An initial conversation is a low-pressure way to find out.

Counselling and Psychotherapy image
Place to Talk Therapies is a small, independent practice offering counselling, psychotherapy, EMDR and couples counselling for adults, in person across Bournemouth, Ferndown and Burbage. Also offering online throughout the UK and internationally.

This practice was built on a simple belief: that people don't need to be fixed, they need to be met. Most of what brings someone to therapy, anxiety, trauma, shame, disconnection, burnout, grief, isn't evidence of something broken. It's evidence of something that happened, and hasn't yet had the space to be understood.

What we mean by shame-aware
Shame is different from guilt. Guilt says "I did something wrong." Shame says "I am something wrong." A lot of what people carry into our sessions isn't really about the event itself, it's about the shame that attached itself afterwards: the sense of having failed, of being too much or not enough, of needing to hide the parts of yourself that feel hardest to look at.

Working with shame means going slowly, and it means honouring what's been protected by staying hidden, rather than rushing to expose it. Nothing is pulled out of you before you're ready. Trust builds first, and the work follows the trust, not the other way round.

What we mean by trauma-informed
Trauma-informed practice isn't a technique, it's a stance. It means we assume that difficult behaviour, big reactions, or a struggle to trust often make complete sense in the context of what someone has lived through. It means safety comes before insight, because a nervous system that doesn't feel safe can't do the work of understanding itself.
In practice, this looks like checking in on pace, never assuming what you're ready to talk about, and treating your own sense of "too much, too soon" as information, not as something to push past.

What we mean by neuroaffirming
A neuroaffirming approach starts from the position that neurodivergent ways of thinking, feeling, and relating are differences, not deficits. We don't work to make anyone more "typical." We work to help you understand your own mind on its own terms, including where masking, sensory overwhelm, or years of being told you're "too sensitive" or "too much" have made that harder to do.

How we work
Our approach is relational and evidence-informed. Relational means the relationship between you and your counsellor is not incidental to the work, it's often where the work actually happens. Evidence-informed means we draw on established approaches, including CBT, EMDR, and integrative, attachment-based ways of working, and apply them flexibly, shaped around you rather than a fixed programme.

Sessions usually run weekly or fortnightly and last 60 minutes, though we can be flexible where that's needed. There's no set number of sessions. Some people come for a few months to work through something specific. Others stay longer, working through patterns that go back further. Both are valid reasons to be here.

Who we are
Place to Talk Therapies is made up of independent, registered counsellors, each bringing their own training, specialisms and ways of working, held together by a shared approach and shared standards. Every counsellor working under the Place to Talk Therapies name is BACP registered, insured, DBS-checked, and in regular clinical supervision.

Getting started
If any of this resonates, the next step is simple: get in touch, and we'll arrange a short introductory call to talk it through, no obligation, no pressure to have the right words ready.

We are experienced qualified, registered and insured counsellors/psychotherapists. Kay and Roger are EMDR practitioners. Each associates qualifications and CPD are listed on their 'More about me' pages.

We actively engage in regular CPD (continuous professional development) to maintain and continually enhance my professional practice.

Where low-cost counselling is offered by a trainee counsellor, they are carefully selected, in the final stages of professional training, and work under regular clinical supervision with support from the wider P2T team.

Counselling is a collaborative and empowering process, and the goal is to help you build resilience, gain self-awareness, develop coping strategies, and improve your overall mental health and well-being.

Our first session together will include an initial assessment, which may involve exploring your history, relationships (past and present), and mental wellbeing. We will also discuss your goals and expectations so that, together, we can determine the most appropriate course of action. We will agree to regularly review your goals and progress. During your sessions, we will work together to explore and address your concerns and work towards achieving your goals. We may talk about emotions, relationships and experiences, practice different coping techniques and strategies, set goals, and create action plans.

Your counselling sessions will normally be booked for the same day and time every week and last 50-60 minutes. However, we seek to offer flexibility, if possible. Counselling can be short or long term. After our initial appointment you can book a regular time slot very week.

Counselling can cover any life-area, at times it can feel a bit like untangling a giant knotted ball of string, so determination and commitment are often required. It can take a bit of time to ‘settle’ into the process and it’s important to know that as we work together through issues and emotions, it can, at times, feel as though things are getting worse. For most people this feeling is temporary and most people begin to experience progressive improvement to their well-being.
Payment can be made by BACS transfer and is required in full 48 hours before your session. International payments can be made via Wise and likewaise are required to be made 48 hours before your session.

You can block book your sessions or we can agree a rolling weekly or fortnightly schedule.

Subject to availability you can book different days/times each week to accommodate shift work or other responsibilities.

If you are unable to attend a booked session, please notify your counsellor as soon as possible and I/they will seek to find an alternative date/time.

Late notifications, within 24 hours of your appointment, will be charged the full fee.

We can occasionally offer reduced fee sessions, for students or those on low income. Please feel free to ask if there is any current reduced-fee availability when you enquire.
Yes.

No.
Session times are staggered so you should not meet anyone on arrival or leaving of your sessions; therefore please do not arrive earlier than your booking start time.
Generally it is inappropriate to have anyone else other than the counsellor and the client in the session unless it is specifically a couples or family session, which I do not currently offer.

If you have children you will need to make arrangements for them to be cared for whilst you are at your session appointment.

If a family member or friend is driving you to your appointment, they are welcome to wait in their car outside of the building or there are some cafes nearby where they could buy a drink.

No. Most clients self-refer. However, we can accept referrals from GP’s, charities and other local counsellors.

Jacqui's office: Is on the ground floor, there is a gravel driveway. Doorways are not easily accessible for a wheelchair.

Once your contact form has been received, a member of the team will usually email you within two to three working days, often sooner.

You will be connected with the counsellor who has suitable availability and is most likely to meet your needs. They will offer a free 15 to 20 minute introductory call, usually by WhatsApp video. Telephone or in-person calls may also be available.

There is no obligation to book. If you choose to continue, you can discuss online or in-person sessions and whether weekly or fortnightly appointments would suit you best.
